The class:
Grading Policy:
-
Three in-class tests will account for 50% of your grade. These will
consist of word problems similar to homework problems and examples done
in class. Constants will be provided but equations will not.
-
You will also have a ten minuite quiz every week, two of which will
not be counted (no make-ups) and which will account for 10% of your grade.
These will consist of thought problems not requiring math and will be similar
to the questions at the end of the chapter in your text. They will also
cover lab material.
-
An additional 15% of your grade will be from a comprehensive final.
You will be allowed to bring one sheet of equations to the final.
-
Another 15% of your grade will be based on your performance in laboratory
exercises and two computer asignments which will be made during the
semester. Attendance at laboratory meetings is required.
-
The remaining 10% will be based on homework and classwork problems.
Although attendence is not strictly required we will do problems and or
answer questions in class to be turned in during almost every class. You
are responsible for turning in these problems whether you attend class
or not. Addtional problems will be assigned as homework to be done outside
of class. Solutions to these homework problems will be put on the web page
after you turn them in so that you can check your mistakes. I will give
extra credit (one point) for the first person to point out any error
in the solutions to me. You may turn in homework problems one week late
and get half credit. You may work with others in the class on homework.
Problems on the three tests will consist of problems similar to those assigned
as homework or worked as examples in class. You will not pass this course
unless you practice solving problems before the test.
-
Scores on test and homework problems will be based on partial credit for
correct method. Be sure to show all your work in order to get full credit.
-
Lab scores are based on the criteria listed in the format section of the
lab manual (first page). All applicable criteria listed in the format will
be included in the evaluation of the report. In particular conclusions
are judged subjectively by the instructor and contribute 10% to 15% of
the total grade. Creativity in analysis of the experiment will be rewarded
(it is important to do more than just follow the directions).
