Sine Gordon Wave equation
This is a simulation of the Sine Gordon wave equation.
-
The Sine button launches a standing sine wave (fixed boundary
conditions). Notice that since a sine wave is not a solution to
the Sine Gordon equation it does not remain a Sine wave.
-
The kink button launches a kink which is a solution to the Sine Gordon
equation.
-
The Gaussian Pulse button launches a gaussian pulse, which is not
a solution to the Sine Gordon equation.
-
The collision button launches a kink and anti-kink so that they
collide .
As you can see from the simulation, kinks and anti-kinks have particle
like properties (in this particular case they stick together- at least
until the simulation begines to fail). Kinks and anti-kinks are examples
of solitions, non-linear waves that have particle like properties.
