World Wide Data Collection Test using ULI's

Background

Kyle Forinash (Physics) and Raymond Wisman (Computer Science) are testing the practicality of collecting data over theŻInternet from a large number of widely distributed ULI's as in the diagram at right. Our purpose here is to enlist others who are willing to be part of a short-term data collection network. The results will be reported in a presentation at the AAPT convention January 1999, Anaheim, California.

Can you help us?

To be a partner for this test you will need to:
  1. Register the information needed to access the computer with the ULI.
  2. Download a small program that makes the computer serial port appear as a TCP port (see the instructions).
  3. Connect a ULI with a light sensor to the serial port.
  4. Hang the light probe out a window.
  5. Leave the computer, ULI, and TCP to Serial Port software working for the hours registered.
