SUMMARY

"Code of Student Rights, Responsibilities, and Conduct"

Individual rights are best protected by a collective commitment to mutual respect. We have a social contract with each other. Without this contract and without these obligations and responsibilities, personal rights are jeopardized. Our responsibilities and obligations to one another preserve our individual rights and freedoms and promote our collective values. For these reasons, the "Code" was created.

Student Rights and Responsibilities

The University community will not tolerate inappropriate behavior and the University Police and staff will enforce policies that protect individual rights and freedoms. Inappropriate behavior includes, but is not limited to:

Academic Misconduct

*A student must not adopt or reproduce ideas, words, or statements of another person without appropriate acknowledgment.

**A student must not steal, change, destroy or impede another student's work.

Professors are in charge of their classrooms and will establish acceptable behavior. They have the right to initiate Academic Misconduct proceedings.

Personal Misconduct On and Off University Property

Disciplinary Procedures

A student who allegedly commits a violation of the "Code of Student Rights, Responsibilities, and Conduct" will be notified of such, in writing, by the appropriate faculty member or Vice Chancellor and must meet to discuss the situation. The meeting is the student's opportunity to provide his/her version of events. The faculty member or Vice Chancellor will then determine if the alleged wrongdoing occurred and appropriate sanctions. Students have the right to appeal any proposed sanctions within a certain period of time.

Refer to the "Code of Student Rights, Responsibilities, and Conduct" for more complete and detailed information on the rights, responsibilities and conduct expected of all students, along with the procedures that must be followed to protect those rights. Copies of the "Code" are distributed at orientation and may be obtained at the Information Desk in the University Center.
